Bernard Butler is a British musician and Grammy Award winner. In 1989, he co-founded the band Suede, releasing their debut album Suede, which won the Mercury Prize. This was followed by the era-defining album Dog Man Star. After Suede, Butler collaborated with David McAlmont on the hit anthem “Yes”.
He released two solo albums under Creation Records, earning a Brit nomination, and went on to produce influential albums for artists like The Libertines, Tricky, Black Kids, Kate Nash, James Morrison, Texas, Mark Eitzel, Paloma Faith, and Duffy. His work on Duffy’s Rockferry led to both Grammy and Brit Awards.
As a guitarist, Butler has performed with major artists including Pet Shop Boys, Bryan Ferry, Roy Orbison, Bert Jansch, The Libertines, Neneh Cherry, Robert Plant, and Ben Watt. He is also a Patron of the Bert Jansch Foundation and Generator NE, and he teaches songwriting at the Abbey Road Institute.
In 2022, his collaboration with Jessie Buckley on the album For All Our Days That Tear The Heart was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize. Currently, Butler has completed albums for Sam Lee, The Clockworks, and had released his new solo album Good Grief in 2024.
